How is the Front Loading Washing Machine Better for the environment?

Front Loading Machines work in a similar way as a top loading machine. However, with conventional "top-load" washing machines clothes are suspended in a tub of water and pummelled with a central agitator. Front-load machines repeatedly tumble fabrics through a small amount of water in the bottom of the receptacle, with no agitator. The greatest benefit to this method is the reduction in water and energy use. A typical conventional mode of washing will use about 151.4 litres (33 gallons) of water per load for the cleaning and rinsing process. Front-load washers use about one-third as much water and require about 65 per cent less energy to heat the water during the cleaning and rinsing process. The ability to conserve energy and water is just one of the many attractive benefits of front-loader machines. Other benefits include:

• Less detergent is used. Decreased water use helps your detergent go the extra mile, as fewer suds are necessary for each load. 
  
  
• Reduced drying time. Front-load washing machines turn much faster during the spin cycle, extracting more water from fabrics and reducing costly drying time. 
  
  
• Gentle washing. With no agitator, fabrics are treated more gently and will endure more washes. Also, heavy loads and bulky articles like blankets fit better in the tub. 
  
  
• Space savings. With the option to purchase a model that stacks onto the dryer, front-load washing machines are practical for apartments and small homes with limited space. 
  
  
• Less noise. With no agitator, the only sound you hear is the whir of the spin cycle. Front-load washing machines generally cost about $300 - $600 more than top-load machines but offer a payback through reduced energy, water and detergent use. 
  

*Note: There is a difference between Low Sudsing Detergent and Regular Detergent. That difference is just what it says - one produces less soap suds and one is the same old detergent we've all used for years. If you use Regular Detergent in your front loading machine you must use less of it or the suds can pour out of the washer. Keep in mind Front Loading Machines use less water - less water = less detergent. If they don't come out of the washer you to remember that all of those suds will not rinse out in a normal rinse cycle.

Don't forget too that front loading washers can be stacked vertically or side by side which can help where space or the layout of your laundry is an issue. 

Front Loading Washers are low to the ground. If you have back or any physical limitations please be sure you check this type of washer out in person prior to purchase. If you some physical limitations perhaps you could have it installed on top of a short platform.
